Canada's first World Cup win, and they made it a landslide. Cyle Larin opened the scoring (16') to become the first Canadian man with two World Cup goals; Jonathan David then helped himself to a hat-trick, and two Qatari own goals completed a stunning 6–0 in Vancouver — reportedly the biggest win by a CONCACAF nation in men's World Cup history.
It turned ugly for Qatar, who finished with nine men: red cards for Homam Ahmed and Assim Madibo, whose tackle broke the leg of Canada midfielder Ismaël Koné. "Everyone could hear the bone snap," said coach Jesse Marsch.
Weird & wonderful
Jonathan David — Canada's all-time top scorer — was born in Brooklyn to Haitian parents and partly raised in Port-au-Prince. Canada racked up a reported 97 attacking-box touches, said to be a tournament record.
The numbers describe a total mismatch turned rout: Canada's 4.60 xG to Qatar's 0.22, 79% possession, 32 shots to 2, and 19 corners to 1 reflect near-constant siege, and the 6-0 scoreline actually overshot the xG thanks to clinical finishing plus an own goal. The two Qatar red cards (Elamin in the 33rd, Madibo early in the second half) are the story behind the lopsided shot and corner counts — playing the final hour with nine men, Qatar managed zero shots on target and just one touch in the Canadian box. Qatar keeper Abunada faced 10 shots on target and conceded six, so even a normal save day could not contain the volume the man-advantage created. The result was effectively decided as a contest once Canada led 2-0 against ten men, with the late goals padding an already historic first World Cup win.
